History
Origins: The origins of Prato Textile Museum date back to the mid-20th century when a number of members of the teaching staff of Tullio Buzzi Technical Institute, including Giuseppe and Carlo Ponzecchi, decided to establish a collection of items testifying the development of the local textile industry with a view to stimulating the interest of their students – future textile technicians and entrepreneurs - in their local industrial history.
1975: Prato Textile Museum was founded at Tullio Buzzi Technical Institute following the addition of a large collection of antique textiles donated by Loriano Bertini, a local textile entrepreneur, to the initial collection commenced by the teachers of the school. The size of the collection has since increased considerably thanks to the efforts of the Association of Former Pupils of T. Buzzi Technical Institute and other important local institutions such as the Municipality of Prato, Cariprato bank and Prato Industrial Union.
1997: Prato Textile Museum was moved to a new temporary home at the Palazzo Comunale in such a way as to increase public exploitation of the collections via the development of enhancement programmes. One of the most important of these enhancement initiatives was the consolidation of relations with PratoTrade, a consortium of over 150 textile companies from the Prato area specializing in the clothing sector, whose continuous donations enable the existence of the Contemporary Section of Prato Textile Museum.
2001: The Association of Friends of Prato Textile Museum was founded in order to ensure further development of the collections via the acquisition of new exhibits. The donations facilitated by the Association of Friends of Prato Textile Museum include a large range of textile sample books and materials from local textile companies and private citizens.
5 May 2003: Prato Textile Museum was inaugurated in the presence of the President of the Chamber of Deputies, the Hon. Pierferdinando Casini, at its definitive premises in the former Campolmi textile mill, a fine example of 19th century industrial architecture in the centre of the city of Prato.
November 2003: Prato Textile Museum Foundation was established by Prato Chamber of Commerce, the Municipality of Prato, the Province of Prato and Prato Industrial Union for the purpose of managing Prato Textile Museum.
